Wales has produced some of the best surfers in Europe. And it’s not surprising, considering the amount of coastline we have and the quality of the conditions.

There are plenty of great beaches where there’s consistent good quality surf. The only problem is the cold. Full wet suits are required, even in summer. You can go surfing on most beaches from Llangennith and Newgale in the south to Hell’s Mouth and Whistling Sands in the north. All the main breaks have equipment rental and surf schools offering first class training.

Wales is also becoming recognized as a top class windsurfing destination, the Gower coast in particular. And this is just one of the locations. According to Tristan Boxford, Former European Wavesailing Champion “the potential for great windsurfing spots is endless”.

Kitesurfing has also become very popular here. Check out Rhosneigr on Anglesey, Wales’s top location and the chosen venue for numerous contests.

Wales has some excellent dive sites, where you’ll find the best scuba diving and snorkeling in the UK. The waters around Pembrokshire are bursting with life and have great visibility; the Marine Nature Reserve of Skomer Island is a major attraction for divers.

You can go kayaking too. Check out the coasts of North Wales and Pembrokeshire. You’ll find some of the best sea kayaking in Europe here. The rivers Tryweryn and Dee provide intense, wild white water action and are also good for rafting.

If you’re after something more relaxed head to the rivers Wye and Teifi or Llyn Gwynant in North Wales, where you can enjoy a peaceful day canoeing on smooth flowing waters.
