Chepstow Castle
Chepstow castle is possibly the earliest stone castle in Britain.

Here you’ll find Sleepy villages, ruined abbeys, and lots and lots of castles. The Wye Valley is also home to Chepstow's impressively intact Norman castle, the area’s greatest treasure.

The Wye and Usk rivers completely dominate the landscape here. They meander endlessly through the many green valleys and rolling hillsides. No matter where you are walking or driving in this area, you’ll feel their presence. The curving Wye is believed by many to be the most beautiful river valley in Britain.

Places not to be missed include; Chepstow's Castle; Tintern's spectacular abbey and the massive standing stones of Trellech. Then there’s Arthur's Cave at Doward and the classic border town Monmouth. The valley is simply magnificent.

This area, on the border between England and Wales, was once fighting ground for Romans and Normans alike. The Celts, the Silures, then the Welsh, fought Romans, Saxons, Normans and the hugely powerful Marcher lords to keep the Wye from the 'lost lands' in England. This resulted in, possibly, more castles per square mile than anywhere else in Britain.

The Wye Valley is home to hundreds of scenic walking trails and charming little towns. There’s literally towns, villages and historic sites around every corner. If possible, take the Wye Valley Walk. It’s a waymarked trail along the impressive and stunning gorge of the valley. It goes all the way to Monmouth in Wales.
